Swelling or oedema of the forehead, eyes or face are common side effect of hair transplant surgery, particularly 2–7 days after the procedure. In some cases, the oedema is so severe that the patient is unable to open his or her eyes. In rare cases, it is accompanied by eyelid ecchymosis (black eyes). This may result in morbidity as well as a delay in returning to normal life and work. Many methods for reducing oedema have been proposed, including both physical methods and the administration of steroids.
Physical methods include wearing a firm headband, lying down in a semi-lay down position after surgery, applying adhesive tapes below the hairline, and using ice packs or frozen pea bags. Steroids can be administered orally, intramuscularly, or by combining them with a local anesthetic.
Face swelling after a hair transplant usually occurs between the second and seventh days following the procedure. It can be very severe at times, causing pain and difficulty opening the eyes. In some cases, it causes purpleness of the eyelids (ecchymose). In fact, purpleness and swelling are common side effects of a hair transplant.
Swelling after hair transplant is a common occurrence. The most affected areas are the forehead, face, and eyelids, which causes discomfort in the patient's life. Swelling combined with tension causes throbbing pain. There are some measures that can help to reduce or eliminate swelling after FUE. Hair transplant face swelling is completely normal as long as it’s moderate.
The classic FUE method involves opening micro-channels in the recipient area to implant hair grafts. Isotonic fluid (saline fluid) is injected under the skin to help the hair implant smoothly and easily. The fluidized skin softens and swells, making implantation easier. A small trauma is defined as channel opening and needle injections. Edema (swelling) is a natural defense mechanism of the body. The effect of isotonic fluid injected into the recipient area lasts for 2-3 days after surgery.
Face swelling is a common complication of the channel hair transplant method. It has a strong impact on the brow and eye area. Furthermore, supraorbital ecchymosis can occur.
Swelling after a hair transplant usually goes away on its own after one week. The fluids are excreted in the urine by the body's circulations through the kidney. Anesthesia injected to numb the skin is excreted in the same way. Assure yourself that swelling after a hair transplant is a normal occurrence. There will be no negative psychological effects or needle concerns if the doctor explains all possible outcomes to the candidate prior to the procedure.
