Many people decide to have hair transplant surgery due to their hair loss. During hair transplantation, a small group of hair follicles, called grafts, are removed from the head at another donor site and transplanted to a thin or hairless area. A single hair transplant session can take approximately 6-8 hours. In some cases, multiple sessions may be required to achieve the desired result or if you continue to lose hair.

Hair transplantation is an investment of time and money, and the optimal outcome of hair transplant surgery depends heavily on postoperative care. You want to make sure that the newly transplanted hair graft gives you time to heal properly. This means taking appropriate precautions to avoid future hair growth and density issues and for best possible hair transplant results.

Generally, you should avoid swimming for the 2nd month after a hair transplant operation, or until your surgeon allows you. Your hair graft and the donor area of the scalp need time to heal, especially since the scabs will heal and fall off on their own. This will reduce your risk of infection. When you start swimming, there are other things to consider to keep your scalp and hair healthy. The most important recommendation is to pay great attention to the transplant donor area. For example, certain diving techniques or other water activities may make the area tense. During the healing period, avoid any other postures that cause pulling on the sides or back of the head. Failure to follow these precautions may slow the rate of healing and hinder the success of the surgery. To successfully perform a hair transplant, postoperative care is essential. It ensures you feel comfortable and promotes hair growth as effectively as possible.

Swimming After FUE

Although most patients return to work two to five days after the hair transplant, strenuous activities are not encouraged for about two weeks. Part of the reason is that the scabs which are formed after the hair transplant will not be removed for about 10-11 days after FUE operation. You can take a shower after the operation, but the washing of the hair is done separately from your body. Water used for washing your hair is cold. It is strongly recommended that you don’t swim in the sea or swimming pool for 4 weeks after the hair transplant.

Chlorinated water can stop bacteria and viruses in the water, this chemical may damage or irritate hair grafts or sensitive scalp. Most hair surgeons will recommend that you avoid chlorinated water for 3 weeks to one month after surgery. Salt or freshwater: Previously, doctors recommended swimming in the sea after flocking, assuming that salt could help speed up the disinfection and healing process. Doctors know that this is not good advice, as pollutants and potential contamination in the water can dramatically increase the risk of infection.
