What is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) uses small punches to obtain individual follicular-unit grafts from the donor area. The grafts are then placed in the areas selected for restoration. What is Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)?

In strip FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), a strip of hair-bearing scalp is removed from the donor area. The strip is divided into follicular-unit grafts for transplantation, and the donor wound is closed with stitches. This leaves a linear scar in the donor area.

What Is the Distinction Between FUE and FUT?

The main difference is how donor grafts are obtained and the pattern of scarring left behind. Strip FUT leaves a linear donor scar; FUE leaves small scars across the extraction area. Neither method is scar-free. Early recovery is often quicker after FUE than after strip FUT, but the return to work or exercise depends on the procedure and your surgeon’s instructions. Discuss the expected appearance of your donor area and your preferred hair length when considering treatment.
