Una caída de cabello que evoluciona siguiendo los patrones de la escala de Norwood también se llama MPB, un acrónimo de Male Pattern Baldness en inglés, o alopecia masculina de patron. Es el tipo de pérdida de cabello más común que se encuentra en ambos sexos y es una caída que sigue patrones fundamentales. Los factores genéticos, o antecedentes familiares en los que hay calvicie, son la fuente más común de pérdida de cabello en los hombres. Sin embargo, esto también puede verse influenciado por factores hormonales y ambientales. Muchos estudios han demostrado que la calvicie en los hombre se correlaciona con las hormonas sexuales llamadas andrógenos. Estos tienen múltiples roles, incluido el de influir en el desarrollo del cabello. Hay un período de desarrollo para cada cabello de la cabeza. La calvicie de patrón masculino hace que este período de crecimiento continúe reduciendose con el tiempo y el folículo piloso se reduzca de tamaño con el envejecimiento, creando zonas de cabello más cortos y finos. Desafortunadamente, muchos hombres afectado por alopecia masculine no notan los síntomas iniciales de la calvicie. En consecuencia, antes de llegar al diagnóstico y recibir el tratamiento, muchas personas se encuentran perdiendo una parte de su cabello mas amplia de lo que hubiera sido necesario.
Muchos investigadores de todo el mundo han propuesto diferentes esquemas de clasificación. Muchos investigadores consideran que la sexto nivel de Norwood sea una etapa avanzada de la calvicie de patrón masculine. En esta etapa, el cabello restante en la parte posterior y los lados de la cabeza tiene la forma de una herradura. El puente de cabello que una vez se extendió por el área de la coronilla ahora ha desaparecido, y solo queda el pelo miniaturizado. Las partes frontales y la zona del vértice se han combinado en uno y la falta de cabello en los lados ha aumentado aún más, con la presencia de pelo que permanece en pequeñas zonas en la parte superior de la cabeza. Las mujeres que se encuentran en esta situación también podrían beneficiarse de un trasplante de cabello. Sin embargo, sus expectativas deben seguir siendo pragmáticas y realistas.
Significa seguramente que la caída continúa a un nivel más avanzado y el paciente se esta quedando calvo. En este nivel de calvicie se encuentran en un nivel muy cercano a la calvicie avanzada. Sin embargo, con tecnologías médicas y técnicas avanzadas de trasplante de cabello, la calvicie de patrón masculino se puede reducir y tratar. Sin embargo, debe entenderse que comenzar la búsqueda de un tratamiento en las primeras etapas siempre es mejor que esperar demasiado.

El número de injertos depende de muchos factores como el grosor del cabello, el tamaño del área receptora, la capacidad total del donante, la técnica utilizada durante la extracción, la apertura de las incisiones y la colocación de los injertos. En general, el número puede variar entre 5000 y 5500 unidades para una cobertura aceptable.
