Difference Between DHI and FUE

FUE and DHI describe different stages of a hair transplant. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a way of obtaining grafts from the donor area. DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a term used for placing grafts with a specialized implantation device. A procedure described as DHI can therefore use FUE to obtain its grafts.

What is FUE hair transplantation?

During FUE, small punches are used to obtain individual follicular-unit grafts from the donor area. Graft placement involves recipient sites in the planned areas of hair loss. The extraction and placement stages each require careful planning and handling.

FUE avoids removing a strip of scalp, but the extraction sites heal with small scars. The distribution of extraction matters for the appearance of the remaining donor hair.

What does DHI mean?

DHI commonly refers to placement using a sharp implanter, which creates a recipient opening and inserts a graft in the same step. The term is also used in different ways by clinics, so ask what the proposed procedure involves.

Implanters can be used in different ways: a dull implanter places a graft into a previously created site, while a sharp implanter can create the opening as it places the graft. In either case, the graft must first be obtained from the donor area.

What is the difference between FUE and DHI?

The practical comparison is between the planned extraction and implantation techniques. Ask how grafts will be obtained, how recipient sites will be created and how the grafts will be placed.

DHI does not mean that no incision is made. It also does not establish a higher graft survival rate, greater density or a shorter operation for every patient. Those outcomes cannot be inferred from the technique name alone.

Which approach is suitable for me?

The assessment should consider your donor hair, hair-loss pattern, intended coverage and expectations. Review how the proposed plan uses your available donor hair and what it means for future treatment.

Shaving requirements, recovery arrangements and the time needed for the procedure should be confirmed for your own treatment plan. Avoid comparing these details solely through the labels FUE and DHI.

Is DHI more expensive than FUE?

Clinics price their services differently. Compare written quotations that specify the planned treatment, graft count and included services. The term DHI alone does not establish the total cost or value of a procedure.
