When you hear the term "hair transplants," you might imagine the patchy, noticeable hair plugs of yesteryear. However, hair transplants have come a long way in the last decade. Hair transplantation, also known as hair restoration, is an outpatient procedure that uses micrografting technology to donate your own hair follicles to thinning areas of your scalp.
Results of hair transplant are visible and are thought to be permanent. The procedure is also time-consuming and requires a period of healing and recovery. As a result of these factors, people who have already experienced significant thinning of their scalp hair are the most likely candidates for a hair transplant.
It takes time for your skin to heal after your hair follicles are grafted into areas where your hair is thinning. In fact, it is normal for some of your hair to fall out during the first three months following the procedure. Healing time can range from 6 to 12 months. However, once the healing process is complete, the transplanted follicles begin to grow hair, filling in the bald patches on your scalp. This is hair that will naturally grow as you get older.
The hair follicles' movement is permanent; there is no way to return them to their previous position. The transplanted hair follicles, like the rest of your hair follicles, have a lifespan. They may eventually stop producing as much hair as they used to.
Hair transplantation is a procedure as well as a process. It can take up to a year to 18 months for the hair to grow, thicken, and fully mature after being transplanted from the donor area to the recipient or bald area. The hair will fall out 4 to 6 weeks after the hair transplant is implanted. The follicle will be safely left behind after 3 to 5 months of hair restoration, and new hair will begin to grow.
During this time, the patient will begin to notice hair loss, a natural part of development that has been known to arouse feelings of fear and worry. At this point, hair separation is expected, and it is critical to note that the separation of the only structure of the hair with an important part, the root follicle, is safe and intact. Shedding will result in a new, healthier hair structure. There will be no more drastic changes from two weeks to a month.
The lost hair begins to grow, but because it lacks strength and cannot penetrate the scalp, it causes folliculitis, a skin condition. Some patients may confuse folliculitis with an infection. However, if it is an infection, it will be accompanied by other inflammatory symptoms that will worsen over time. Meanwhile, folliculitis and its symptoms usually clear up within ten days.
Hair growth after a hair transplant is simple. The transplanted hair will begin to shed within the first two weeks. This, however, is not cause for concern. After about four months, regrowth begins and can cause folliculitis. It will also fade over time, and after four months of surgery, brittle, non-pigmented hair will replace it. Eight months after surgery, the hair began to thicken and darken. In addition, the patient will see the final hair growth pattern after about eight months. Within a year, all significant changes should have ceased, and the result should be a full strand of hair.
