A hair transplant without a full head shave is possible for suitable patients. The practical choice depends on your donor hair, the area being treated and the surgical plan. Before deciding, it helps to distinguish between keeping the surrounding hair long and transplanting grafts with their existing hair length retained.
The donor area supplies the grafts; the recipient area is where they are implanted. Shaving requirements should be discussed for each area separately.
With a partial shave, a section of the donor area is shortened and surrounding hair may cover it. With an unshaven approach, individual target hairs may still be trimmed or cut during harvesting while the surrounding hair stays long. Long Hair FUE retains the length of the hairs on the grafts during extraction and implantation. These descriptions should be clarified before booking.
At ASMED, Long Hair FUE is available for suitable patients, with grafts extracted and implanted while their existing hair length is retained. An initial assessment of unshaven hair helps with planning; it does not, by itself, mean the operation will be performed without shaving.
Shortening the hair can improve access to the treatment area and make the hair and skin easier to see during the procedure. The appropriate preparation is discussed as part of the surgical plan. A preference to keep your hair long should be raised during consultation.
Keeping surrounding hair long can make the temporary change in hairstyle less noticeable. For people who value their current style, this can be an important consideration when discussing treatment. The degree of concealment depends on the hair, the areas treated and the procedure selected.
Working around longer hair requires careful access and handling. The number and distribution of grafts should follow the donor assessment and restoration plan. Preserving hair length still leaves a healing period and the need to protect the grafts.
Suitability is assessed individually. Your hair loss pattern, donor area, medical history, existing hairstyle and desired coverage all help determine the recommendation. Photographs showing both the donor area and the areas you want to restore are a useful starting point for an ASMED assessment.
Small scabs commonly clear over about 1–2 weeks, although healing varies. Follow the washing and handling instructions provided for your procedure. At ASMED, you receive care instructions before leaving and return the following day for a wash and check. Discuss work, travel and social commitments with the clinic when planning your visit.
Preserved hair length does not mean the transplant is at its final result. Transplanted hairs may shed before new growth develops over the following months.
At ASMED, we explain the proposed procedure according to each patient's circumstances, with attention to their goals, donor hair and individual needs.
