5a-Reductase inhibitors part 1

In some tissues testosterone must be metabolized to derivatives. DHT is active metabolite of testosterone. 5α-Reductases (5α-Rs) are a family of enzymes distributed in many tissues. They transform precursors into active hormones. The 5a reductase inhibitors block the conversion of testosterone to dihydotestosterone (DHT ). There are three of 5aR. Type 1 is mainly present in sweat and sebaceous glands in the skin. Type 2 predominates in the genital skin, prostate, beard, and scalp hair follicles. Type 3 is found throughout the epidermis and dermis.
